What is gum recession?

Gum recession is what happens when the gum tissue becomes irritated or damaged to the point where it detaches from the surfaces of the teeth. Eventually, it will start to wear down and leave the tooth root exposed. This is dangerous because, without adequate protection, the tooth root becomes more vulnerable to bacteria and decay. In extreme cases of gum recession, the teeth can begin to loosen and shift out of alignment.

How does PST™ work?

While traditional methods of gum surgery usually require cutting tissue samples and stitching them to the gum line, PST™ does not. Only a single incision the size of a pinhole is made so that specialized instruments can be inserted into the gum line. These instruments will slowly loosen the tissue so that it can be gently stretched over the exposed tooth root. Once the tissue is in place, a special collagen material is used to hold it there until it reattaches to the tooth surface.

What are the benefits?

When compared to traditional methods of gum surgery, PST™ provides many benefits to patients. These include:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Minimally painful
  • Short recovery period
  • Instant cosmetic results
  • No need for sutures
  • No need for pain medication in most cases

PST™ is quickly becoming the most preferred solution of treating gum recession. To learn more about this innovative new receding gums surgery in Newport Beach, CA, contact Dr. Staadecker and schedule your consultation today! Check out our PST brochure.

Before and After Pinhole Surgical Technique

Mr. A was watching "The Doctors" and saw the Pinhole Surgical Technique featured on a recent episode. He knew that he had recession, but didn't want tissue from his palate or sutures for the grafting. Here is a before and a 1 week after photo. The lower teeth are next to come!

Ms. H has generalized toothbrush abrasion and root sensitivity. It was painful for her to breathe in a mouth-full of air or drink cold beverages. PST or "Lunchtime Gum Lift" was performed to reposition the gum tissue over the exposed roots. Collagen strips were used as the grafting material and no sutures or stitches were required. Ms. H has no further root sensitivity due to complete root coverage.

Mr. H had extreme cold sensitivity on the upper right. He asked his dental hygienist if anything could be done for his condition. She referred Mr. H to Dr. Staadecker who did a combination Pinhole Surgical Technique and Alloderm grafting to cover the exposed roots. Mr. H no longer has sensitivity to cold beverages due to the root recession!

Mr. S had recession since he was an adolescent following orthodontic treatment. The canines on the right and left side were impacted and were pulled down with orthodontic chains. He also has a frenum muscle that is contributing to recession. The frenum was removed at the time of pinhole grafting. The roots are fully covered following the PST treatment.

Mr. S had recession on the left side as well of 4-5mm and a frenum pull. The frenum was removed at the same time of pinhole grafting. Both roots were fully covered and there no recession is present any longer utilizing PST (Pinhole Surgical Technique).
